Waldgebiet Ferchau bei Salzwedel

Waldgebiet Ferchau bei Salzwedel is a protected forest reserve near Salzwedel featuring a mix of oak, hornbeam, and beech woodland. Small lakes and wetland areas are scattered throughout the wooded landscape.

The area gained protected status as a Special Area of Conservation in 2003 and was integrated into Europe's Natura 2000 network shortly after. This designation ensures the forest and its habitats remain safeguarded for future generations.

This forest maintains traditional German silviculture practices while serving as an educational site for environmental conservation and biodiversity studies.

The forest is accessible via marked walking trails connected to Federal Road 248 on the eastern side and State Road 8 on the western side. These paths make it easy to explore the different woodland sections.

The forest shelters several rare animal species including the crested newt, barbastelle bat, and Eurasian otter. These protected creatures depend on the varied habitats created by the woodland and water ecosystems.
