Halden bei Ramsbeck, Nature conservation area in Bestwig, Germany
Halden bei Ramsbeck is a protected nature site west of Ramsbeck in Bestwig that consists of former mining heaps. Today these slopes support rare lichens, mosses, and plants adapted to metal-rich soil conditions.
The site preserves mining heaps created over 450 years of ore extraction in the Ramsbeck region. These old deposits eventually became a refuge for specialized plant communities.
The nature reserve encompasses both vegetated and bare areas, which allow for the development of extensive lichen formations and specialized moss covers.
The area is best explored on foot with clear views of the distinctive slopes. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven and partly steep in places.
The site contains metal-rich grasslands that represent a major concentration of this rare habitat type in the Sauerland region. This distinctive ecology developed because of the mineral content in the mining heap soils.
