Mainkai is a paved riverside promenade along the Main River in central Frankfurt, running between the Old Town and neighboring districts. On one side flows the river, with views of old bridges and glass towers beyond; on the other, benches, small cafés, and food stands line the walkway.
For centuries, Mainkai served as Frankfurt's main port, where merchant ships loaded and unloaded goods that passed through the city's busy trade networks. Over the course of the 20th century, commercial activity faded and the quay was gradually transformed into a public promenade.
Mainkai is a place where Frankfurt residents come to walk after work, sit on benches, and watch boats and swans pass by on the river. The Eiserner Steg footbridge at one end connects this riverbank to Sachsenhausen, a neighborhood known for its traditional cider taverns.
Mainkai is easy to reach on foot from Frankfurt's Old Town and Römerberg square, both just a short walk away. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as parts of the path have uneven cobblestones, and some sections can get crowded on warm afternoons.
