Freibad Oberspree, Public swimming facility in Niederschöneweide, Germany
Freibad Oberspree was a large public swimming facility along the Spree River in Berlin's Köllnische Heide district with various water amenities. It featured expansive sunbathing areas and multiple pools designed for different uses.
The facility opened in 1913 as Freibad Adlershof on leased land. It later closed in the 1980s due to deteriorating water quality from industrial pollution in the Spree.
The site was a popular gathering place for swimming clubs and local visitors during the 1920s and 1930s. It shaped leisure and sport activities for people in the area at that time.
The site is difficult to access today since it lies within a forested area along the Spree banks. Visitors can explore the grounds on foot but should be prepared for its natural woodland setting.
After closure, the grounds were completely reforested between 2001 and 2009. The former swimming pool site is now natural woodland that conceals its recreational past.
