Müggenburg, Neuss-Norf, Medieval château in Norf, Germany
Müggenburg is a château near Norf with a rectangular main building flanked by two square towers at its northern corners, which frame a small courtyard. The grounds are surrounded by a moat and accessed through a baroque gatehouse.
The castle originates from the 13th century and underwent major renovation around 1750 under Carl Dominicus von Schwartz, a Düsseldorf court councilor. This renovation work gave the structure its present baroque appearance.
The chapel within the grounds now functions as the Roman Catholic parish church for Norf, showing the religious role the estate played over many centuries. Visitors can explore this church space and understand how the château was linked to the spiritual life of the community.
The château is privately owned by the von Waldthausen family since 1913 and can only be viewed from outside, with interior access not available to the public. However, the chapel on the grounds is open and can be visited regularly.
The château rises directly from its moat waters on elevated foundations and is connected to the entrance by a double-flight staircase adorned with Rococo details. This distinctive construction created an impressive entry sequence that reflected the importance of the estate.
