Astra tower, High-rise building in St. Pauli, Hamburg, Germany

The Astra Tower was a high-rise office building on the Altes Bavaria site in Hamburg, designed by Carl Friedrich Fischer and Horst von Bassewitz and built in 1969/1970 for the Bavaria-St. Pauli Brewery. Its form was meant to recall a pilsner glass: a solid gray shaft carries the upper floors, which overhang from the fifth storey up. The facade was a grid of pale gray concrete bands and recessed dark window rows, with the magenta "ASTRA" sign near the top.

The office tower was built in 1969/1970 to designs by Carl Friedrich Fischer and Horst von Bassewitz on the Alte Bavaria site, the headquarters and brewery of Bavaria-St. Pauli, whose Astra beer gave the tower its name. A Hamburg investor group led by Wilhelm Bartels bought the site in May 2001, and the brewery closed in 2003. Plans to keep the tower failed: a court rejected von Bassewitz's copyright suit, structural concerns ruled out preservation, and it was demolished in 2005.

The tower's name comes from the Astra beer brewed by Bavaria-St. Pauli on this site, and the brewery's Astra logo was mounted high on the facade. From 1987 to 1990 the building appeared in the ZDF series Das Erbe der Guldenburgs as the head office of the Balbeck brewery, a rival of the protagonists.

The original tower no longer exists: it was demolished in 2005, and the New Astra Tower on the same spot was completed by 2007. The site lies on the former Bavaria brewery grounds in St. Pauli, now the Neue Hafenkrone area. The building is a private office block, so there is no public interior to visit; the successor's facade only hints at the chalice shape.

The tower was designed to resemble a Pilstulpe, a tall pilsner glass, not a generic beer glass. Architect Horst von Bassewitz sued against the planned partial conversion, arguing it would alter that shape and breach his copyright; the court dismissed the claim because the redesign amounted to demolition. Structural concerns then led to the full demolition in 2005.
