The museum sits at Schleusenredder 10a in Ohlstedt, on the edge of the Wohldorfer Wald. From the Ohlstedt U-Bahn station a 1.6 km footpath leads there, first around a school ground, then through the forest along the former Kleinbahn track. No barrier-free access existed when renovation began; a ramp was ruled out under monument protection and alternatives were still being examined.
The museum building is Hamburg's northernmost station building and carries monument ID 23100 from the Hamburg heritage office. It is the surviving former freight dispatch building; the 360-square-metre maintenance hall beside it has almost decayed, and neither track nor platform remains.
