Derneburg Castle, Heritage castle in Holle, Germany
Derneburg Castle is a medieval stone complex in Holle, Lower Saxony, featuring towers, battlements, gardens, and a moat. The buildings include historic interior rooms and converted outbuildings that together form the spaces used to display contemporary art.
The castle was built in the 12th century and became an Augustinian convent in 1213. After secularization, it was converted into a private mansion in 1846 and remained in private hands before its eventual transformation into an art museum.
Derneburg displays contemporary artworks inside rooms where the stone walls, low ceilings, and uneven floors are part of the experience. The contrast between old surfaces and new works gives each room a different character that visitors notice as they move through.
The grounds are easy to explore on foot, with wide paths around the buildings and open areas between them. A visit in dry weather is recommended, as some of the artworks are located outside and the paths can be uneven in wet conditions.
The property was owned by the artist Georg Baselitz, who used it for years as a private home and working space. Some of the choices made in arranging the rooms and gardens still reflect his personal vision of the place.
