Mausoleum Derneburg

The Mausoleum Derneburg is a sandstone pyramid tomb standing about 11 meters high with a slope angle of roughly 61 degrees. Its entrance features a temple portal decorated with ornamental leaf work and contains nine sarcophagi, with additional family graves arranged around the base.

Count Ernst zu Münster commissioned the structure in 1839 after studying ancient tombs during travels to Italy between 1793 and 1798. His interest in Egyptian architecture drove the creation of this distinctive burial monument.

The structure bears the Münster family name and served as their burial place. Its Egyptian form contrasts with Christian symbols displayed on the facade, reflecting the religious identity of those interred within.

Visitors should check accessibility before visiting, as this is a private burial site in a rural area. The location is somewhat remote, so getting local directions or planning your route in advance is helpful.

The entrance displays the Münster family coat of arms as a prominent identifying mark. Despite its Egyptian form, the structure bears a large cross clearly marking it as a Christian burial place.
