Alter Wasserturm, Köln-Stammheim, Water tower in Stammheim, Germany
The Alter Wasserturm Stammheim is a building with a 28-meter base structure made of solid materials at the southern edge of the district. The structure was later converted into seven loft apartments, with an external staircase and elevator added.
The building was constructed in 1881 and originally reached a height of 40 meters. It supplied drinking water to Cologne-Mülheim and surrounding districts until it was designated a technical monument in 1980.
The inscription of the Rheinische Wasserwerks Gesellschaft remains visible above the sealed entrance and tells the story of the building's industrial past. It shows the role that private water supply companies once played in the city.
The location sits on the southern side of Stammheim and is easy to reach. Visitors should note that after its conversion, the building is residential and can only be viewed from the outside.
The renovated building is equipped with photovoltaic installations that combine it with modern energy technology. These systems show how historical structures can meet today's sustainability requirements.
