Walkmühle, Cultural center and artist studios in Wiesbaden, Germany
Walkmühle is a complex of buildings along Kesselbach stream in northeastern Wiesbaden, with structures that originally served brewing purposes. Today the ensemble houses artist studios, cafes, exhibition spaces, and small businesses.
The building was erected in 1737 as an orphanage with workshops, serving to train orphans in trades. In 1867 it transformed into a brewery, with extensive cellars that remain visible today.
The site functions as a meeting place for artists and visitors attending exhibitions, readings, and workshops. The twelve studios show how creative professionals use the space as a working environment.
The site is easy to explore thanks to its open layout with clear paths between buildings. Visitors should know that some studios are only accessible during specific times, so it helps to check in advance.
Inside the historic cellars of the former brewery, a wine shop now sells regional wines and antipasti. The contrast between the cool stone atmosphere of the old passages and their modern use makes this an interesting feature of the visit.
