Friends of Johann Gottfried Herder created this memorial in 1850 at his favored location for reflection. The site underwent major restoration work in 1994 to maintain its condition.
The inscribed words on the stone preserve Herder's connection to Weimar and feel like a quiet conversation between the thinker and the place. Visitors encounter phrases carved into Ehringsdorfer travertine that underscore the importance of this figure to the city.
