Buchenwaldplatz

Buchenwaldplatz stretches between Carl-August-Allee and Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße, forming an open square in Weimar's northern section. Residential buildings frame the space while green areas break up the layout and provide breathing room.

The square was originally called Watzdorfplatz before being renamed Platz der 51000 in 1958. This change marked a shift in how the community chose to honor and remember its past.

The Ernst-Thälmann monument stands where a previous memorial once commemorated a 19th-century conflict. The site shows how communities reshape memory and public commemoration across different eras.

The square is easily reached by bus lines 4 or 6 stopping at Carl-August-Allee, with a short uphill walk from there. The terrain slopes gently, so visitors should expect a mild grade when approaching from public transport.

The square contains a children's playground with a stone bridge and sandbox nestled among deciduous trees. These trees change appearance with each season, creating a shifting natural backdrop throughout the year.
