Drei-Tröge-Brunnen, Historic fountain in Heidelberg, Germany
The Drei-Tröge-Brunnen is a fountain composed of three sandstone troughs located on the western side of Gaisberg mountain. The structure channels spring water through underground passages from a natural source in the surrounding hillside.
The fountain was built in 1887 along Bierhelder Steige, a path that had ancient origins. This route once connected two significant settlements during the Roman period.
The troughs reflect the practical importance of water in rural life and community gatherings. This spot served shepherds and drovers as a necessary stopping point during their daily work.
The fountain sits along a hiking path and is accessible throughout the year, though the route involves climbing a hillside. Sturdy walking shoes and time for a moderate climb are recommended.
The three separate troughs allowed multiple animals to drink at the same time rather than one after another. This practical design was essential during livestock drives when large herds needed watering quickly.
