Gaisberg

Gaisberg is a mountain summit located about 376 meters above Heidelberg's western old town and forms part of the Odenwald range. Today it is densely forested with deciduous trees and divided by natural gullies that create varied terrain across the landscape.

In the 17th century, Matthäus Merian documented the mountain as a treeless landscape, marking a stark contrast to its current dense forest coverage. This transformation shows how the terrain has evolved significantly over several centuries.

The mountain serves as a green space where locals routinely connect with nature, and its pathways are woven into the everyday rhythm of the community. Residents use these routes not just for leisure but as part of their regular movement through the landscape.

The mountain is accessible through several hiking trails, with the Riesenstein viewing platform offering direct views across Heidelberg's old town. The pathways are generally well-maintained, though some sections feature steeper terrain than others.
