Obere Burg

Obere Burg is a castle in Heidelberg perched on a hilltop, commanding views across the city and surrounding landscape below. The surviving walls display multiple construction periods that blend Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.

The castle began around 1000 as a defensive structure protecting the growing town of Heidelberg. Over centuries it expanded and adapted to changing needs until it gradually lost its strategic importance.

The castle holds regular exhibitions of medieval artifacts discovered during archaeological excavations conducted throughout the twentieth century.

The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset with a marked path starting from the base of the hill leading to the ruins. The walk upward is manageable and offers several viewpoints of the town along the way.

The castle walls contain specific architectural elements that demonstrate the transition between Romanesque and Gothic construction methods.
