Neue Universität

Neue Universität is a neoclassical building in Heidelberg's Old Town containing multiple lecture halls, seminar rooms, and a grand assembly hall. The structure was carefully designed to accommodate thousands of students and faculty and continues to serve as the main teaching venue on campus.

The building was erected in 1931 and received its funding through American families led by former U.S. Ambassador Jacob Gould Schurman. This international effort made it possible to build a modern teaching facility during an economically difficult time in Germany.

The entrance displays a statue of Athena with an inscription honoring the spirit of learning, which forms an important part of the university's identity. Visitors notice immediately how this symbolic focus on knowledge shapes the atmosphere throughout the building.

The building is located in the Old Town and is easily accessible on foot, with clear signage for different areas inside. Keep in mind that this is an active teaching and learning space, so some areas may not be accessible during classes.

The adjacent Witches' Tower was originally a defensive fortification and prison, later transformed into a memorial site for students killed in World War I. This shift from military structure to war memorial reveals the complex history of the site across multiple eras.
