Monopteros, Greek Revival temple in Englischer Garten, Germany.

The Monopteros features ten limestone columns supporting a green dome topped with red, standing 16 meters tall on an artificial hill.

King Ludwig I commissioned architect Leo von Klenze to construct this temple between 1833 and 1837 to honor Elector Karl Theodor and King Maximilian.

The circular colonnade structure represents a classic example of Greek Revival architecture, demonstrating the influence of ancient design in 19th-century German monuments.

Visitors can reach the monument using Munich's U3 or U6 underground lines, with several bus routes stopping near the Englischer Garten entrances.

The temple's elevated position on its artificial hill provides panoramic views of Munich's skyline, including numerous church spires and architectural landmarks.

Explore Munich differently: hidden treasures, unusual museums, secret gardens

Munich can also be explored beyond the usual routes. This collection brings together places where visitors are fewer, but where the city shows itself differently. You’ll find baroque churches like the Asam Church, modern art museums such as Haus der Kunst or Lenbachhaus with its expressionist paintings, and ancient collections in Königsplatz. The city also hides unexpected surprises: the Eisbach wave in the middle of the English Garden, where people surf all year round, the roses in Westpark for a peaceful break, or the royal carriages in Nymphenburg Palace. Some monuments, like the Peace Angel, remind us of lesser-known parts of history. Each place tells a part of Munich that the usual guides don’t mention often.
