Monopteros, Greek Revival temple in Englischer Garten, Germany.

The Monopteros is a temple-like structure with ten limestone columns crowned by a green dome topped in red, standing about 16 meters high. It sits elevated on an artificial hill within the Englischer Garten.

King Ludwig I commissioned architect Leo von Klenze to build this monument between 1833 and 1837 to honor Elector Karl Theodor and King Maximilian. The project was part of Ludwig's efforts to shape Munich with neoclassical monuments.

The circular colonnade shows how Greek architectural styles echoed through 19th-century Munich and shaped local building traditions. Visitors see here an example of how ancient forms were revived in contemporary structures.

The monument is easily reached via U-Bahn lines U3 or U6, with several bus routes stopping near the Englischer Garten entrances. The walk from the garden to the structure is relaxed and passes through maintained green areas.

From the elevated location, views open across Munich's skyline with many church spires and other city landmarks. This panoramic outlook makes the spot popular for photography.
