Englischer Garten, Public park in Munich, Germany
This park lies in northeastern Munich and extends with meadows, wooded sections and watercourses along the Isar. The grounds combine closed tree clusters with wide clearings that are crossed by narrow streams and larger channels.
The grounds were created from 1789 under Prince Charles Theodore of Bavaria, with Benjamin Thompson drafting the original plan. Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell later shaped the landscape and expanded the site to its present form.
The name refers to the English landscape garden tradition with deliberately natural paths and open meadows. Throughout the year families use the lawns for sunbathing and picnics, while joggers and cyclists follow the continuous routes.
Several entrances lie near the Universität station on lines U3 and U6, from where you reach the paths inside. The routes run mostly flat and remain walkable even in bad weather, though sturdy shoes are recommended when it rains.
In the Eisbach channel a standing wave forms where surfers train year-round regardless of the season. The wave arises from water pressure beneath a bridge and attracts athletes and onlookers daily.
