Funkkaserne, Military barracks in Munich, Germany
Funkkaserne is a former military complex in the north of Munich, made up of several large reinforced concrete buildings arranged around open courtyards. The structures follow the functional, symmetrical design typical of German military construction from the 1930s, with flat roofs and plain facades.
The complex was built in the late 1930s as a Luftwaffe base and then occupied by US forces after the Second World War. The Bundeswehr later took over the site before it was finally handed over for civilian use in 1992.
The Funkkaserne has been converted into a residential and creative quarter, where people live and work inside the old military buildings. Walking through the grounds, you can see how the strict layout of a barracks has been quietly transformed into an everyday neighborhood.
The former barracks area is now a publicly accessible residential district that can be explored on foot. A walk through the grounds gives a good sense of the building layout without any need to book in advance.
Between the end of the war and its occupation by US forces, the site was used as a reception camp for displaced people from Eastern Europe. This chapter of its history is rarely mentioned today, even though it directly affected thousands of people passing through Munich.
