Funkkaserne, Military barracks in Munich, Germany
Funkkaserne is a military complex in Munich built with reinforced concrete structures and functional design typical of 1930s military architecture. The buildings display the stark, no-nonsense construction style of that era with straight lines and solid forms.
The complex was built between 1936 and 1938 as a Luftwaffe installation and was later used by different armed forces after the war. Until 1955 it also served as a reception center for displaced persons from Eastern Europe.
The structure represents a period of German military expansion, serving different armed forces including the Luftwaffe, US Army, and Bundeswehr over several decades.
The exterior of the former complex is partially accessible and offers views of the buildings from outside. Guided tours provide information about the structures and their different periods of use.
The site remained continuously active for military operations for over half a century from its opening through 1992. This long span of continuous use reflects the turbulent history of Germany and Europe.
