Kournas, Natural freshwater lake in Apokoronas Municipality, Greece.

Lake Kournas spans 579 acres between the west slopes of White Mountains and Georgioupolis plain, reaching depths of 22 meters in its waters.

The lake, known as Korissia in ancient times, contained a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena at its shores during the Hellenic period.

Local legends tell of a young woman who transformed into a fairy at the lake while escaping her father, now protecting the wildlife within these waters.

Visitors can reach Lake Kournas by car, located 43 kilometers east of Chania, with multiple taverns and boat rental facilities along its shores.

The lake receives water from an underground spring called Amati, which becomes visible during summer months when water levels decrease substantially.
