Schinaria, Rethymno, Beach and village in Agios Vasileios municipality, Greece
Schinaria is a small coastal settlement on the southern shore of Crete featuring a secluded beach bordered by natural cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. The area displays the typical landscape of southern Cretan coves with a mix of sandy and rocky sections.
The settlement has been inhabited since ancient times, with archaeological findings revealing continuous occupation through various periods of Cretan civilization. The region was later shaped by Venetian and Ottoman rule before becoming part of modern Greece.
The village preserves traditional Cretan customs that visitors can experience during summer gatherings, where locals perform regional dances and prepare dishes with ingredients from the surrounding landscape.
Getting there from Rethymno takes about 45 minutes by car following the coastal road through mountain passages, so having your own transport is helpful for the journey. Weather is dry and sunny from June through September, making these months ideal for swimming and exploring the area.
The waters off the coast are rich with marine life, offering good conditions for snorkeling and underwater photography during summer months. The relative isolation of the settlement means the beach remains much less crowded than those in more touristy areas.
