Haliartos, Ancient archaeological site near Lake Copais, Greece
Haliartos is an ancient ruined settlement perched on a low hill near Lake Copais. The fortification walls that once protected the city are still visible along the southern and western slopes of the hilltop.
The settlement was founded in antiquity and became an important community in central Greece. It experienced destruction during ancient conflicts and is preserved today only as archaeological remains.
Archaeological excavations between 1926 and 1930 revealed a Temple of Athena at the acropolis summit, enclosed by a surrounding wall.
The site is located in a rural area and accessible by local roads. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the hill is uneven and there are few flat paths to walk on.
Two towers built with interlocking stone blocks remain visible on the southern slope from an early construction phase. These unusual building methods reveal craftwork techniques from a period when such construction approaches were uncommon in the area.
