Amfilochia, town in Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece
Amfilochia is a small town on the coast of Greece, situated along the edge of the Amvrakikos Gulf. The settlement consists of simple stone houses with colored walls and narrow streets that lead to the harbor, where small fishing boats are moored.
The town was founded in ancient times and was originally called Limnea. Later, during Ottoman rule, it became known as Karvasaras when a regional leader brought settlers here and built a caravanserai for merchants.
The name Amfilochia traces back to ancient founding stories of the settlement. Today, traditional fishing practices and simple ways of life shape the community, while old buildings and the harbor architecture reflect this long local heritage.
The best time to visit is spring and fall when the weather is mild and fewer tourists are around. The town is accessible by car, and simple accommodations like small hotels and guesthouses with friendly hosts are available.
The old Ottoman-era caravanserai still stands by the harbor and recalls the time when merchants traveled here by land and sea. This structure is one of the few large historic buildings still standing today, showing how important this place once was for trade.
