Tatarna Bridge, Modern road bridge over Lake Kremasta, Central Greece.
Tatarna Bridge is a modern road structure spanning Lake Kremasta in central Greece. The construction consists of three sections with a central opening of 196 m and two smaller sections of 150 m and 97 m.
A stone bridge from the 17th century originally stood at this location before the Kremasta Dam construction in the 1960s submerged it underwater. The current structure replaced this earlier crossing and has served the region since.
The bridge carries the name of the Virgin Tatarna monastery from 1556, marking the historical connection between infrastructure and religious heritage in this region.
The structure carries the GR-38 highway and connects the towns of Agrinio, Karpenisi, and Lamia as a key transportation route. Drivers should be aware of weather conditions that can affect traffic crossing the lake.
Engineer Aristarchos Oikonomou designed this structure using innovative methods that won three international awards for engineering excellence. The recognition demonstrated that the solution was cutting-edge for its time.
