Kastraki lake, reservoir in Greece
Kastraki lake is an artificial body of water in Aetolia-Acarnania created by a dam built on the Acheloos river. The water spreads across roughly 28 square kilometers and is framed by surrounding hills that form a quiet landscape.
The lake was created in the late 1960s with the completion of the Kastraki dam in 1969. The dam transformed the Acheloos river valley, flooding former farmland and small settlements that once stood in the area.
The lake shapes daily life for people in the region. New villages have grown around its shores, where families walk and spend time enjoying the natural surroundings.
The lake is accessible by road and offers walking paths along the shoreline. Visitors can easily access the water and find quiet spots to sit or explore the surrounding area on foot.
A hydroelectric power plant sits at the top of the dam and uses the water to generate electricity for nearby towns and cities. This makes the lake an important energy source for the region.
