Monastery Prousou, Orthodox monastery in Evritania, Greece
Monastery Prousou is an Orthodox monastery perched on a steep cliff in the Evritanian mountains, surrounded by fir forests and deep ravines. The complex includes a church, monastic cells, and various structures built gradually over centuries on this high-altitude location.
The monastery was founded in early times and developed over centuries as an important Orthodox site. It gained prominence when it became a center of resistance during the independence struggles of the 1820s.
The monastery houses an icon of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Luke the Evangelist, which was moved from Bursa in Asia Minor during the iconoclastic period.
The monastery lies in the mountains roughly a half hour's drive from Karpenisi and welcomes interested visitors. The site requires good walking shoes and some physical fitness since paths are uphill and the air is thin at this elevation.
Next to the monastery stand two old stone watchtowers with crenellations that once served a defensive purpose. These towers recall the military history of the site and offer views across the surrounding hillsides.
