National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Public university in Athens, Greece
The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is a public university in several municipalities across the Athens area, including the capital itself as well as Zografou, Dirfys-Messapia and Dafni-Ymittos. The institution includes faculties for humanities and sciences, law, medicine and theology and is spread across different locations.
King Otto of Greece and the scholar Ioannis Dompolis founded this university in April 1837 after the country's independence. The opening marked the beginning of higher education in the Balkans and stood as a symbol of the new Greek state.
The university campus spreads across several neighborhoods of Athens and displays different architectural styles from neoclassical main buildings to modern research centers. Students move between sites and create a living academic community in different parts of the city.
The different locations are spread across the Athens metropolitan area and can be reached by public transport. Visitors planning to see the buildings should check in advance which faculty or museum is housed at the desired location.
Within the university museums, visitors find collections on topics from mineralogy to the history of the Greek language that are open to the public. The libraries preserve rare manuscripts and historical documents from early modern Greece.
