Zeitenlik, cemetery in Ampelokipoi, Central Macedonia, Greece
Zeitenlik is a cemetery in Thessaloniki containing over 20,000 graves of soldiers from multiple countries. The site is divided into five sections, with the French section holding about 8,000 graves and the Serbian area containing over 7,500 burials.
The cemetery was established in 1916, growing out of a Serbian military hospital used during World War I. Its final design was completed in 1936 following architect Alexander Vasic's plan, supported by an international agreement from 1920.
The cemetery brings together memories of many nations in a shared space. This burial ground reflects the deep meaning of loss and international remembrance for those who fought in the war.
The grounds have well-maintained pathways between graves and benches for resting. Visitors should dress respectfully and maintain the quiet atmosphere, as this is a place of remembrance.
The name comes from the Turkish word for olive, as the area was once covered in olive groves before the war. A small museum housed in an old keeper's house displays photographs and personal items belonging to soldiers.
