Mykonos windmills, Historic windmills in Mykonos, Greece

The Mykonos windmills are seven white stone cylinders with conical roofs standing on a flat hill southwest of town. From there you look out over the sea and the narrow lanes of the old quarter below.

Between the 17th and 19th centuries the mills ground flour for ships crossing the Aegean. Some also provided hardtack for long sea voyages.

One of them bears the name Bonis and shows tools used for grain processing inside. Visitors see wooden gears and millstones that once operated here.

You reach the mills on foot along narrow paths climbing from the harbor. Access is open all day and the view over the sea is especially fine in the evening.

The Geronymos mill still keeps its complete wooden grinding system from the 18th century. The gears and shafts are carved from local wood and fit together without metal nails.

Traditional windmills in Europe and Asia

The windmills from Kinderdijk in the Netherlands to Cape Cod demonstrate technical innovation and cultural heritage. These structures served for grain milling, drainage, and industrial production. Each mill documents the local history and technical development of its region. The collection includes 18th century mills like the Sanssouci Mill in Potsdam and modern specimens like the Murphy Mill in San Francisco.
