Aegean Maritime Museum, Maritime museum in Tria Pigadia, Mykonos, Greece
The Aegean Maritime Museum occupies a 19th-century Cycladic building and displays ship models, maps, and navigational instruments spanning different periods. The collection also includes historical books, photographs, and manuscripts that document seafaring traditions in the Aegean region.
The museum was founded in 1983 and housed in the former residence of Captain Nikolaos Sourmelis, a figure who played a role in Cretan independence movements. This setting connects the collection directly to key figures in Aegean maritime history.
The collection reflects how maritime life shaped communities throughout the Aegean, with everyday objects showing fishing practices, trade routes, and seafaring customs. These items reveal the deep connection between local people and the sea across different eras.
The museum is located near Fabrika bus station and operates daily from April through October, with parking available nearby. Visitors should allow time to explore the different exhibition areas, as the collection is quite extensive.
Several ships and the notable Armenistis Lighthouse from the collection have been restored and relocated to Athens for public view. This approach allows visitors to encounter these historical objects in different locations rather than only within the museum walls.
