Kavala aqueduct, Ottoman aqueduct in Kavala, Greece
The Kamares aqueduct extends across 250 meters with 60 stone arches reaching a maximum height of 25 meters above ground level.
Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned the construction of this water supply system between 1530 and 1536, incorporating elements from previous Byzantine structures.
The structure represents a fusion of Byzantine and Ottoman engineering techniques, evident in the architectural design of its massive stone archways.
The aqueduct transported fresh water from Mount Pangaeus to Kavala until 1911, sustaining the city's population through a network of public fountains.
The structure stands on the foundations of a rare Byzantine barrier wall that may have functioned as an earlier water transportation system.
