Syggrou Estate, estate in Kifisia, Athens, Greece
Syggrou Estate is a large green property spanning about 950 acres in the northern suburbs of Athens, characterized by forests of pine and cypress trees. Beyond the woodland, the site includes olive groves, vineyards, historic structures like a neo-Gothic chapel and a 19th-century villa, plus educational gardens and a beekeeping museum.
Andreas Syggros purchased the property in 1875 and developed it into a multifunctional estate combining residence and agricultural pursuits. Following his death, his widow donated it in 1921 to the Greek Agricultural Society with the intention of transforming it into an educational center for farming and gardening.
The estate reflects the vision of a woman who donated it in 1921 to serve as a center for agricultural learning and community development. Visitors today encounter buildings and grounds that speak to her legacy of philanthropy and her commitment to helping others through education.
The estate welcomes visitors for walking, jogging, and cycling on trails of about 6 kilometers, with children's playgrounds and picnic spots available throughout. Plan your visit for cooler months or early morning hours, as the site offers limited shade during hot weather.
The Chapel of Saint Andrew stands as the only neo-Gothic church in Greece, designed by German architect Ernst Ziller who shaped many of Athens' landmarks. This architectural rarity makes it a distinctive element rarely found elsewhere in Orthodox religious buildings.
