Kedrinos Lofos, Commercial forest in Sykies Municipal Unit, Greece.
Kedrinos Lofos is a commercial forest in the Sykies Municipal Unit featuring diverse pine species across its terrain. The site includes multiple access points, marked hiking trails, two open-air theaters, a zoo, and a natural history museum.
The forest underwent extensive reforestation beginning in 1921, with a university forestry school planting trees systematically between 1929 and 1989. This large-scale planting shaped the woodland structure visitors see today.
The name change to Kedrinos Lofos occurred in 1987 through a proposal by local author Georgios Vafopoulos during Thessaloniki's city council discussions.
The site has multiple entry points and clearly marked trails that help visitors navigate easily. The best times to explore are the cooler months when walking is more comfortable.
A major fire in 1997 destroyed a significant portion of the forest, yet the area recovered through planned reforestation and natural regeneration. Visitors today can observe how the woodland has renewed itself.
