New Mosque

The New Mosque is a historic building in Thessaloniki featuring a central dome, minaret, and detailed interior decorations. The architecture combines Ottoman elements with European design principles to create a distinctive style.

It was designed in 1902 by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli and originally served the Donmeh community as a place of worship. After the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, its purpose shifted dramatically.

The name reflects when it was built, and you can see how the design blends Ottoman and European architectural styles throughout the interior. The mix is visible in the decorative details and the way the space is arranged.

It sits in central Thessaloniki and is within walking distance of other landmarks in the area. Visitors are advised to dress respectfully and confirm opening hours before arriving.

After more than a century, it reopened in 2024 for Muslim worshippers, marking a significant moment for the local community. This shows how historical places can shift their function and meaning for the people around them.
