The deme developed during classical times and thrived as a local center in antiquity. Excavations in 1888 uncovered inscriptions and marble sculptures from the 4th century BC, revealing the site's importance to its region.
The theater here had five special seats reserved for dignitaries, showing it was a central gathering place for performances during the Rural Dionysia festivals. The discoveries suggest that theater and religious celebration were woven into the fabric of community life.
The site sits near the modern village of Dionysos and is reached by walking across surrounding hills at the base of Mount Pendeli. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as paths between scattered stones and foundations are uneven.
Two marble sculptures of Dionysus were discovered here, including a mask and a seated figure. These finds directly connect the location to early Greek theater traditions and the worship of this god in the region.
