Rogoi

Rogoi is a Byzantine fort near Nea Kerasounta with stone structures and defensive walls that reflect the military architecture of that era. The remains still show the layouts of residential areas and storage chambers where troops lived and kept supplies.

The fort was built during the Byzantine period as a response to the need for protecting coastal areas from attack. It played an important role in the network of defensive structures that secured the region across several centuries.

This location served as a crucial defensive post for the Byzantine population of the region and shaped the daily routines of soldiers stationed here. Artifacts recovered from excavations reveal how people worked and conducted trade during that time.

The site is best reached on foot from Nea Kerasounta village and features informational signs explaining the buildings and their functions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the terrain is uneven and partially overgrown in places.

The site reveals how closely connected neighboring forts were and how signals were exchanged between them to share information. This communication system allowed defenders to respond quickly to threats from the sea and surrounding areas.
