Monastery of St Demetrios Aygou

The Monastery of St Demetrios Aygou sits at 853 meters altitude on the Didymon Mountains and overlooks the Rados river gorge as well as the sea beyond. The structure spans three connected levels linked by stone staircases, with a main temple and a separate cave chapel inside.

Founded around 1100, the monastery served as a sanctuary during the Byzantine period for monks and pilgrims seeking refuge. Later it became involved in the Greek uprising of 1821, when fighters used it for shelter during their struggle.

The monastery displays religious paintings from the 17th century that show how monks expressed their devotion through art in this isolated mountain setting. Visitors today can see these works in the main temple, where they have hung for centuries.

Access requires hiking up a mountain path that demands some physical effort due to the elevation and exposed terrain. Bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water, as the route offers little shade and can feel challenging on warm days.

The site holds icons from the 11th century hidden in a cave chapel, a lesser-known feature compared to the main temple above. This hidden grotto with earlier artwork reveals how monks created sacred spaces in unexpected locations within the mountains.
