Monastery of St Demetrios Aygou, Protected Byzantine monastery in Ermionida Municipality, Greece.
The Monastery of St Demetrios Aygou stands at 853 meters altitude on the Didymon Mountains, overlooking the Rados river gorge and Irias sea.
Established around 1100, the monastery served as a sanctuary during the Byzantine period and later housed revolutionaries during the Greek uprising of 1821.
The monastery contains religious paintings from the 17th century in its main temple and preserves 11th-century icons in the cave of Metamorphosis.
The monastery opens to visitors on October 26 for St Demetrius day celebrations and maintains a three-level structure connected by stone staircases.
The site holds a collection of religious artifacts across multiple periods, including preserved icons spanning from the 11th through 17th centuries.
