Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Instruments, Musical instruments museum in Oia, Greece.
The Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Instruments houses over 200 musical pieces displayed across three exhibition spaces inside an old community building. The collection spans from roughly 2800 BC to the early 1900s.
The museum opened in 2011 based on a private collection built by Mr. Halaris, which had been displayed in Thessaloniki from 1997 to 2010. The move to Oia made the collection available to a wider audience.
The collection shows how Greeks made music across thousands of years and which instruments mattered in their daily lives. You can see how the shapes and materials changed over time, from the oldest periods to modern times.
Visitors must arrange a visit by calling ahead, and the location sits about a five-minute walk from Oia's bus stop. Planning in advance helps ensure a smooth experience at this venue.
Each instrument in the display is accompanied by images showing how it actually looked and was used in ancient times. Audio samples let visitors hear the authentic sounds these old pieces produced, deepening understanding of their role in history.
