Megas Alexandros municipality, Former municipality in Pella, Greece
Megas Alexandros is a former municipality in the Pella regional unit of Central Macedonia, made up of several small villages spread across flat agricultural land. Its administrative center was Galatades, the main village of the area.
The municipality of Megas Alexandros existed as a separate administrative unit within the Pella region until the early 2000s. In 2011, it was absorbed into the larger Pella municipality as part of a nationwide reform known as the Kallikratis Plan.
The municipality takes its name from Alexander the Great, who was born in the Pella region, and that connection shapes how locals identify with the area. Passing through the villages, visitors can notice small references to this legacy in place names and local monuments.
The area is reached by regional roads, and Galatades works well as a starting point for getting around the villages. Basic services are available in the main settlements, but for a wider range of options it is worth heading to the town of Pella nearby.
Despite the 2011 merger, each village within the former municipality kept its own name and community structure, so local identity did not disappear with the administrative change. The area sits on the plain where the ancient kingdom of Macedon once stood, placing it in a landscape with a long history beneath its rural surface.
