Church of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, Orthodox church in Kolonaki, Greece
The Church of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite is a neo-Renaissance church with three aisles located at the intersection of Panepistimiou Avenue and Omirou Street. Its interior features twelve columns of green marble from Tinos island and a floor of Pentelic marble throughout.
Architect Anastasios Orlandos designed this church, which was completed in 1931. The structure emerged as an expression of Greek Orthodox architectural traditions in modern Athens.
The church is named after Saint Dionysius, the first Bishop of Athens, whose conversion to Christianity after Paul the Apostle's sermon is remembered by worshippers today. His story shapes how visitors understand the spiritual identity of this place.
The church is located in central Athens and easily accessible on foot from the surrounding streets. Visitors can attend regular services or explore the interior with its religious objects and artifacts.
The green marble columns come from Tinos island, connecting this interior to one of Greece's most sacred pilgrimage sites. This choice of material gives the space a special regional significance.
