Eleusinion, Ancient Greek sanctuary in Eleusis, Greece.

The Eleusinion is an ancient Greek sanctuary in Eleusis with multiple shrines built on a northern slope. The site contains temple foundations dedicated to Demeter, Kore, and Triptolemus, along with various stone structures and architectural remains from different time periods.

This sanctuary was founded in the 7th century BC as a center for sacred rites that lasted until the 4th century AD. The site underwent changes through the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods while maintaining its religious importance throughout these eras.

The name Eleusinion comes from the goddess Demeter and her daughter Kore, who were worshipped here in ancient times. Visitors today can observe how the sacred grounds were arranged on the hillside to accommodate the grand processions and ritual ceremonies that took place.

The site sits on a hillside, so sturdy footwear with good grip is helpful for walking around safely. The excavated structures are scattered across the area, which means you will need to walk in different directions to see all the main parts.

A large bronze bull statue once stood in the shrine of Triptolemus, symbolizing the link between farming and the sacred mysteries of the place. Archaeological findings reveal that this sanctuary served as a gathering point for major religious processions that came from across the wider region.
