Asnières-sur-Seine, Residential commune in northwestern Paris metropolitan area, France
Asnières-sur-Seine is a residential commune in the northwestern Paris metropolitan area in France, located about eight kilometers from the city center along the left bank of the river in the Hauts-de-Seine department. Streets run through neighborhoods with buildings from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, while green spaces and footpaths line the waterfront.
The settlement was first documented in 1158 as Asnerias and grew from a medieval village into a densely populated suburb. Population increased substantially during the twentieth century, reaching approximately 89,600 residents by 2021.
The town name derives from medieval donkey farms that once operated in this area. Residents today use the riverside promenade along the waterfront for walks and spend afternoons in the local parks.
Three stations on Paris Métro Line 13 and multiple bus routes connect the commune with the capital and surrounding towns throughout the Île-de-France region. Pedestrians find paved paths along the riverbank and through the main residential areas.
The Cimetière des Chiens opened in 1899 as Europe's first public pet cemetery. Numerous graves of dogs, cats, and other household animals rest on the grounds, including police dogs and famous animals from history.
