Gourdon, Medieval village in Alpes-Maritimes, France

Gourdon is a commune perched on a rocky peak at 760 meters elevation overlooking the Loup Valley and surrounding peaks. Views extend across the landscape toward the distant Mediterranean coast.

The settlement first appears in written records from 1035 as a strategic defensive position against invaders. Its fortifications were expanded over time and continue to shape the layout.

The castle at the village's heart shapes daily life with gardens that reflect Renaissance design principles. Visitors can see how the layout and landscaping define the character of the place.

The D6 road connects from Le Bar-sur-Loup, while marked hiking trails ascend the mountainside from various starting points. The steep terrain and narrow pathways require sturdy footwear and careful footing.

A single entrance controls access to the village and opens onto the main street, with thick defensive walls protecting the northern side. This layout reveals how residents once ensured security through restricted access points.
