Abbey of Saint-Gilles

The abbey church features three decorated entrance portals with Corinthian columns, medieval sculptures, and a bell tower from the 18th century.

Founded in the 7th century by Saint Giles on lands given by Visigoth King Wamba, the monastery transformed from its initial dedication to Saints Peter and Paul.

The 11th-century crypt contains the tomb of Saint Giles, which served as a major medieval pilgrimage site until relics moved to Toulouse.

The main church entrance is free, while visitors need to purchase a 3-euro ticket at the office inside to access the crypt and ancient choir.

A spiral staircase made of cantilevered stone steps from the 12th century remains within the northern wall of the former choir.
