The Alyscamps, Roman necropolis in Arles, France.

The Alyscamps extends along the Aurelian Way with rows of stone sarcophagi and tombs beneath tall cypress trees leading to Saint Honorat Priory.

The necropolis served as a burial ground from Roman times through the Middle Ages, containing thousands of sarcophagi arranged in multiple layers.

Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin selected this location for their paintings in 1888, creating several artworks depicting the tree-lined path among the tombs.

The archaeological site maintains regular hours from 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM daily, with many sarcophagi now preserved in the Arles Archaeological Museum.

Bodies were transported from across Europe via the Rhône River to be buried at this prestigious site, creating an economic opportunity for local boatmen.
