Sciences Po, Higher education institution in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, France
Sciences Po is a higher education institution for political science and social sciences with its main seat in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés quarter of Paris. The network includes six other locations in French cities, each oriented toward different geographic regions.
Émile Boutmy founded the institution in 1872 after the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War to promote political education according to French principles. The institution remained private until 1945 and then received gradual state recognition.
The official name École Libre des Sciences Politiques recalls the original foundation as a private institution outside state control. Today this tradition reflects in a teaching model that connects research and public debate.
The Paris location sits in Saint-Germain-des-Prés near the Seine and can be reached by several Métro lines. Visits are usually possible only with prior registration, as it is an active educational institution.
Each regional campus collaborates with universities and institutions of the respective target region and offers exchange programs. The library in the main building holds one of the largest collections on international relations in Europe.
