Château Ausone

Château Ausone is a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate spread across limestone slopes in Saint-Émilion, where Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes are grown. The property has cellars carved directly into the rock that serve as natural storage spaces for wine aging.

The estate originated in Roman times and took its name from the poet Ausonius who lived nearby during the 4th century. Over the centuries it became one of the region's most respected wine producers.

The poet Ausonius, whose name is recalled in the estate's identity, connected literature and wine through his classical influence. Local tradition treats this link as a cultural bridge between the Roman past and contemporary winemaking practices.

Visitors should book appointments in advance to tour the underground cellars and taste wines. The best time to visit is outside the harvest season when staff has more availability for guided experiences.

The limestone caves extend several hundred meters into the hillside and maintain a constant temperature ideal for storage. This natural system has allowed the winery to maintain quality standards across generations.
