Île aux Vaches, River island in Seine River, Paris, France
Île aux Vaches is a river island in the Seine in central Paris, situated between Pont de Sully and Pont d'Austerlitz. The site comprises shallow waters and vegetated banks that give it the character of a natural zone within the urban waterway.
The name comes from the Middle Ages when the land served as pasture for local cattle. As the Seine evolved into an urban waterway, the site transformed into a protected natural area.
The location forms part of the Seine riverscape, contributing to the maritime character of eastern Paris near the Jardin des Plantes.
The site is closed to visitors but can be viewed from the two adjacent bridges that frame it. These bridges offer good vantage points to observe the natural formation and the surrounding river.
The island splits the river into two channels with different water conditions, making this spot challenging for boat traffic. Skippers choose their route depending on water levels and current strength.
