Abbaye des Chambons

Abbaye des Chambons is a former Cistercian monastery located in Borne in the Ardèche region of southeastern France. The stone walls of the original church outline remain visible, though numerous stones from the buildings were repurposed into local houses over time.

The monastery was founded in 1152 under Pierre Geofroi as its first abbot and operated continuously until dissolution during the French Revolution in 1791. Its long operational period reflects the stability and influence of the Cistercian order in the region.

The complex began as a Dalonite establishment and later converted to the Cistercian order under influence from Sénanque Abbey. This change shaped the religious life and community structure in the area.

The site is accessible, with remains scattered across the area while the original church structure remains recognizable. It helps to explore the surroundings to see how stones from the complex were integrated into the modern houses nearby.

The monastery was established by Guillaume de Borne and his sons, with the family name remaining present in the region to this day. This local connection shows how noble families created religious institutions as lasting legacies.
